To give a brief answer, yes, they certainly can. But it’s typically in an indirect way. Essential oils do not provide bronchodilation effects, meaning that their components do not directly help to open up the airways of the lungs for better breathing.
With that said, essential oils do provide aromatherapy which has calming effects. This can be beneficial for those with asthma. Asthma is a condition that typically gets worse when anxiety levels are increased.
The aromatherapy effects that come from essentials oils can help to decrease stress and anxiety which, in turn, can indirectly help make breathing easier. Essential oils have also been found to provide anti-inflammatory effects which may also be beneficial for treating asthma in some people. So yes, essential oils can help with breathing but just know that it’s in an indirect way.
How to Use Essential Oils for Breathing?
The best way to use essential oils for breathing is with a diffuser which is a device that disperses essential oils throughout the entire room so that the particles can easily be inhaled.
However, there are other techniques for using essentials oils that do not require a diffuser. You can place a few drops of an essential oil in a tissue or in the palm of your hand. Then, simply cup your hand over your face. Be sure to exhale first and then slowly inhale the vapors of the essential oil without tensing and making a sniffing sound. You can repeat this process for about 5-10 inhalations.
Another method is to apply the essential oil directly to your body in key spots that are close to your nose. Some examples include the collarbone, under your ears, on the temples, and along the jawline. Just be sure not to ingest the essential oils or get them directly into your eyes, nose, ears, or mouth.
